You need to be prepared that parents and students will arrive at your classroom at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the school day, especially on the first day! I will explain the class norms: Be respectful of others, be prepared for class, participate fully and how I think those help us achieve the goal of being a class family. Thanks for your lovely comment Karen. Every year after, meeting my new class and getting through that first day was exhausting and liberating all at the same time. It helped both parents and students, giving them confidence in knowing how the morning was going to run as soon as the classroom door was opened. The students had a goal, to place a sticky note on each question by the end of the day. The nerves were always there, but I began to feel somewhat comfortable with how the first day would run.
