Auckland to Palmerston North by Train Big cities & bright lights to natural wonders of the North Island The Northern Explorer is a great way to travel New Zealand’s North Island, by travelling the length of the country from Auckland to Palmerston North.
It returns north (to Auckland) on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, leaving Palmerston North at 10am.
Train left on time, made up a lot of time before Hamilton, lost it again after Taumaranui, and we arrived in Palmy perhaps 5 minutes late: an 8 hour journey. KiwiRail has begun work on the refurbishment of carriages for a new Hamilton to Auckland passenger service which is to begin in early 2021. From there, it’s a comfortable 9 hour journey to the City of Sails, through heartland New Zealand and across the exciting Central North Island’s volcanic Plateau. We both got off with some lower back pain. The North Shore is currently linked to Auckland city centre by way of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, over which Northern Busway services operate.
It is a lång ride, 10 jours, but well worth it. I had taken this train once before in the late 1990s and there's really no comparison between the two experiences -- the new train cars are really nice (the US would do well to follow their lead) big windows and a lot of room and an informative audio accompaniment.
