There is a difference between the Julia Child we want to believe we know and the human being that existed. Simply loved it! I realize that's a completely unfair reason to penalize this book: "Minus one star because this Julia Child biography insisted on talking so much about Julia Child!" Big things in her life were told in both words and pictures. By the powerhouse team of Kyo Maclear (author) and Julie Morstad (illustrator), and it is pretty delicious. Gorgeous picture book and it contains my new favorite word, "never-enoughness". One of the most beloved figures in 20th century American culture was Julia Child, the bouyant French Chef who taught millions of Americans to cook with confidence and eat with pleasure. It was really Julia that mad. Illustrated with more than 500 full-color photographs, this book contains 26 menus for cooking for company and making feasts of all kinds, from Holiday Lunch to Dinner for the Boss.

The prose is well-written but not the point; the personality of its subject is, and that is infused throughout the book. This beautiful picture book tells the story of Julia and her best friend Simca.

The life story from childhood, career details, quotes, and excerpts were all fascinating. Sharing a love of cooking and having no wish to turn into big, busy people who worry too much and dawdle too little, they decide to create a feast for growing and staying young. I loved the writing style, the quirky characters, and the beautiful artwork.

In this bite-sized book, Julia offers seven menus to enliven everyday meals, and includes step-by-step recipes, shopping lists, variations and suggestions for leftovers, all complemented by more than 100 photographs. by Tundra Books. The children at story time LOVED the rainbows that float above the delicious food! The story is a solid 3 stars, but it is the illustrations that get it the 4th star. I'm interested in how the author "imagined" Julia Child's childhood and where she drew boundaries in her imaginings.

The menus include a Birthday Dinner, Buffet, Cocktail Party and Vegetarian Spread, and are illustrated with 120 full-color photographs. Yes, I adore food writing, and yes, I adore whimsical children’s books, so yes, this is exactly within my wheelhouse and there’s no mistaking that fact. I love all the yummy food references, but making the main character an actual historical figure and setting her in a fictional childhood seems like a recipe for confusion. The illustrations are beautiful, but I was confused by the story. There are much better books out there for Julia Child aficionados.

I think I can safely say, however, that I have never been so happy to win a book in my life, and I’m thoroughly torn over whether to keep it for myself or whether to send it on to one of my four nieces. But this is hardly a biography.

I wonder if parts of it were based on fact or if the whole story was imagined?

In this most perfect of partnerships, author Kyo Maclear provides the words and illustrator Julie Morstad the pictures. Such a fun story. Packed with guidance on how to plan, organize and cook the meals, how to vary the menu and how to make creative use of leftovers, its color photographs guide you through, step-by-step, to the finished dishes. I find her very inspirational, and this book did not disappoint me. I don't think I'd have liked Julia Child terribly much. As any Childsian could tell you, Simca and Julia did not meet until they were adults, but that’s a fact that shouldn’t get in the way of your or your child’s enjoyment of this book. As she did in Virginia Wolf and Mr. Flux, Maclear takes a real life figure (in this case, Julia Child) and imagines a whimsical moment in her life. Unfortunately I still do not really know what French cuisine is, other than a set of rules. Ms. Shapiro provided me with a deeper look into the woman beneath the surface. Anyone wants to know more about Julia Child's personal life and her journey to becoming an icon in the culinary world should just read her autobiography "My Life in France". While this was an interesting behind the scene look at Julia Child, I realized that bringing her to life was impossible. Sweet Marjoram, this is a beautiful, beautiful book. The narration is done by a niece of Julia Child's, and she really does a good impression of her aunt's voice without it being campy or annoying -- kind of essential for an audiobook about Julia Child! Excellent introduction to the larger than life personality that she was. To add more books. I also liked how Julia's truly personal and human characteristic were brought to light and praised. I picked this up because I really like Laura Shapiro's take on food history. Julia, Child . She notes this at the start so readers know all the details aren't true. I am not sure if Julia Child would have sanctioned this book. “Bon appétit!”. Holy cow, man!

She felt that women leaned towards hysteria and fear in the kitchen and made housewives sound like chowder-headed twits. A wonderful celebration of an American woman who celebrated food and cooking. Hang on to the best parts of being a child. She notes this at the start so readers know all the details aren't true.

In the guise of a children's book it is actually a message for adults. Refresh and try again.

Most importantly, Julie Morstad's illustrations are be. The companion volume to Julia’s PBS television series “Cooking with Master Chefs,” this book features 16 of America’s most renowned chefs, and interprets their recipes for the home cook. This will be the start of my Julia Child obsession lol. Organized by menu, it’s a practical guide to year-round entertaining, featuring casual everyday dinners, special occasion party spreads, and everything in between. Her occasional disasters, and brilliant recoveries, were legendary. I also liked how Julia's truly personal and human characteristic were brought to light and praised. by Viking. I loved it!!! Hager does a good job of telling the basics of Child's life while still including enough details to prove why she was (and is) so important and so beloved. A short and balanced biography. I used to watch her cook. There was more to this book than at first was apparent--in a sneaky, albeit highly intelligent manner, it sucks you in and lets you know all there is of interest about Julia's life, and flows along effortlessly then suddenly you realized you've been reading for an hour and a half! Though the book on the outside looked like a book for a child I was really glad to receive the book from goodreads.

The factual elements of her life are interwoven into a fantasy version and it all comes out under done! At a young age she loved French food which is more than some kids can say. I really liked the way they had sections of illustrations followed by chapters.
