Before the new Star Wars movies came out, the Star Wars Legends books were the fans' best chance at expanding the galaxy. While the Original Trilogy era books are most often cited as good places to start, fans of Jedi and clone troopers have plenty of options in the Prequel era, too. We get to see Leia, as the main character, struggle with the trappings of statehood while still getting into some exciting action setpieces as she unravels plots threatening the divided New Republic. Coruscant is in New Republic hands, Luke is trying to learn more about the Force, Han and Leia are helping mop up the last Imperial fleets while taking care of their newborn twins. Padmé herself is treated as both a heroic figure and a tragic one, her death an inevitable shadow as Palpatine’s machinations crush what was left of the Republic. These books have basically nothing to do with modern Star Wars—or even Star Wars as it existed post-Empire Strikes Back. He’s a member of Rogue Squadron and an all-around fantastic character. While reading you can literally hear the voices of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and the others in your head. Shadows contains some uncomfortable scenes—Xizor’s secret weapon is that his species gives off seductive pheromones, and Leia spends a good deal of the book kidnapped—but it does fill in the gaps between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Its emphasis on the uncertainty and randomness of war doesn’t stop it from also working as a vivid adventure story.

The audio book is an excellent experience. But hear me out: yes, the movies are…what they are. The plot of Vector Prime reads like a good alien invasion story, with the heroes of the Original Trilogy, their offspring and other Expanded Universe fan favorites trying to fight the initial wave of alien invaders. So you want to get more into the Star Wars Expanded Universe by reading the novels. Disney just couldn't let him go.
Shadows is perhaps the least essential book on this list, but if you’re new to the EU, it might help you know what exactly fans are talking about when they (jokingly or seriously) refer to “the Bantam era.”. As a devotee of Star Wars lore ranging from the obscure (nobody can beat my Arden Lyn) to the embarrassing (having read all the Young Jedi Knight novels), my interest in the upcoming space sim is off the star charts.
