A highly recommended natural disaster that has it all including the obligatory dog to really heighten your angst and wetten your hankie when the lava flows. Most Hollywood film reviews by me on science-based movies are nothing but a list of what they did wrong, with no "however" of accurate bits to follow that list, so kudos for doing it more than half right.A pleasant diversion, very pretty to look at. Dante's Peak truly deserves the recognition of being one of the best disaster films ever made, it is simply an enjoyable and entertaining movie that can appeal to just about anyone.

Starting in this case with a volcano, we know there will be: --Ominous portents of doom on a seemingly ordinary day, such as people being boiled alive in a hot springs, too many dead trees in the middle of summer and alarming seismic activity.

But then the whole movie is no more than a well-executed exercise in the generic. Volcano erupts violently and destroys town; intense peril.

This led to much discussion (how far away were the two vehicles? Most definitely a more realistic route for this particular slice of volcano drama, pretty accurate with volcano facts offering a good education really.

From the very start its a waiting game, waiting for the fun to start when the mountain blows.

Cast and crew of this movie found themselves in a distribution race with 20th Century Fox, which was producing Volcano (1997) at the time.

It provides all the harrowing special effects -- disintegrating buildings, volcanic fireballs, collapsing bridges, fiery lava rivers -- that you could want. However, all that having been complained about, much else was very accurate: what gets tested for by volcanologists, what monitoring stations of the day looked like, what some of the warning signs of a coming eruption might be.
