In this post, we will be looking at the variations of the tone stack circuitry in Marshall’s early product lines. Allthough these bass amps are solid state amps, they are still part of the Marshall amps story. These cabinets originally were fitted with two 12" Celestion speakers. The 5150 is the combo version of the 3315 head. Their first amps were very heavily "inspired" on the 1959 Fender Tweed 4x10" Bassman. It has 4 channels. The styling was changed to more modern standards though. The US distributor at that time (Unicord Inc.) decided to switch to 6550 output tubes in favor of the EL34's. The 2000 Lead and 2001 Bass heads are probably the loudest and most powerfull Marshall tube amps ever built. While the basic tone stack topology is relatively common throughout the Marshall lineage, each vintage has its own characteristics that make it work with their corresponding design changes. These cabinets originally were fitted with four high power 12" Celestion speakers. In the years to follow these cabinets were produced in the usual black vinyl. Only a couple of hundred of these amps were manufactured. After passing through the first filter, the signal is then fed directly into another passive filter which shares a similar shelving effect, only this time in the treble frequencies. The 4203 is the combo version of the 3203 head. Viewing this brief history of the Marshall amps, several era's can be distinguished: Although this division is not entirely accurate, it does give a good impression of the different era's. Not many people actually use this "feature" as the sound in triode half power mode isn't as desirable as it is in pentode full power mode. The 1992 standard edition amps were produced in blue vinyl. It was meant for lead, bass and organ use. Locate the .68uf cap (C1) which is found on V1A and replace it with a .47uf cap.

Late 1965 or early 1966 the ceramic speakers were replacing the alnico's. These amps were available in a black and red covering. The schematics suggest they are, but you won't find JCM800 printed on the amps. The JTM60 head was introduced in 1996. This amp was in production from 1965 to 1966. These 1960AV style cabinets were fitted with four Celestion T3896 G12 Vintage speakers. This will increase the gain a little. R.I.P. The Integrated Bass System (IBS) range was launched in 1985. In July 1969 Marshall dropped the Plexi face plates and switched to the gold colored brushed aluminium metal face plates as we know them still today. It used a Celestion 12" PowerCell speaker.
