I started reading this book because my girlfriend from Chile was given it to read from one of her friends, presumably thinking it was a good literary work and representation of a part of Australia. There's a problem loading this menu right now. It's terribly sad, but strangely life affirming to think such a beautiful book could come from such sorrowful -- yet sometimes joyful -- love. Most books which are supposed to be about good people are rather nauseating. There are several other things that usually make me dislike these books. Gaita is up there with Ondaatje.

Romolus sounds like a decent person, hard working, talented in his trade; honest to the point of bluntness, wanting to do what is right. "Long and boring" says my 16 year old who read it for English. The Second World War destroyed or altered considerably the lives of a generation in Europe coming into adulthood at that time. So, I expected it to be quite another kind of book to what it turned out to be.
