Be sure, however, to have the stem reinforcements. More News. The canoe is steady as a rock when paddled from the kneeling position but if you're wearing boots your feet may get stuck under the low riding seat.
I Prefer Lower StemsNever been fond of those big 22-24" stems that catch the wind, That said, I like 20" and was a little sqeemish at going down to 19". For access to exclusive gear videos, celebrity interviews, and more, subscribe on YouTube!
I purchased the Limited Edition El Tigre kevlar version with black trim this summer and have used it on local lakes and one BWCA trip. Don’t know about the 16.
Check out a few other canoe recommendations below or explore all canoes to find the perfect one for you! If you only need a solo for day tripping, there are hulls better suited to that use than this one.
You will find it quick on the water, yet extremely stable for a 16 footer.
Did you get another Adirondak? Likes to be loaded.
Just what I expected. I passed up Bells, Mad Rivers, and all the rest after saving, looking and testing canoes for over four years.
But, you are also moving much faster and dragging less canoe weight. It also has excellent speed, especially considering that its bow is so much more comfortable (slightly wider) than boats like a Minnesota II.
The last Duralite 16 I purchased was right at $1,000, but now is $2,000!) Let me know, maybe we can meet somewhere and you could try both boats. This canoe is no compromise, it's very stable for fishing, great for teaching kids, and I love the duralite layup, I actually prefer it over the kevlar, it's not sun sensitive, and is more translucent than kevlar, not to mention cheaper. Hate the riveted seat brackets - would rather have them hung from the gunwales so they could be easily moved. we got a kevlar-epoxy model--get the black alum. What I personally noticed in terms of slight disadvantages over 3 years of paddling is that they can be challenging to portage in the wind, because they do not sit heavily on your shoulders like a heavier canoe.
Souris River Q17, Green El Tigre Kevlar, 44 Lbs.
No wonder it accounts for approximately 60% of our sales. I use this boat for work and play.
The 35 pounds is especially helpful in portaging and loading the car!
If you are primarilary going tandum with gear please look at the new 17' Souris. We just got back from Killarney Provincial Park near Sudbury and rented a Souris 17.
), Fourth, I’m inclined to believe that epoxy really is stronger than polyvinyl resin.
however, just after we bought it, souris came out with a three-seater version of this model--nice if solo fishing is your game.oh--shipping was a problem. It weighs a little less than 40 pounds.
I did have a Wilderness 18 first and liked it for its speed but the Quetico better suits its purpose and the one foot shorter canoe IS a little easier to portage. The 17 has taken over as the main back woods horse with a little more speed and capacity, but is too long for a serious solo boat. It's my first kevlar boat and even at 17 feet I still have no problem moving it around on my own. (For other solo options, check-out our Tranquility and our Prospector 16.)
One time a group ahead of me down the turtle river wrapped their canoe around a rock in a rapid and had to abandon it. That is very helpful. The Souris River, Quetico 16 Duralite, loaded with two and a week's food and gear, surpassed anything I've ever witnessed.
Novice and experienced paddlers alike will love this canoe, designed by Keith Robinson. My Son and I recently had the canoe on Crescent Lake in the Olympic Nat. The hull is a shallower “V” than the Mad River, but is from stem to stem.
Maybe one day I will buy a Minnesota II for its marginal additional speed. Belly seems a little bit rounder and the V of the bow and sterm steem about a quarter to a third shorter than the 17s.
Dakota. Anyway this buyer’s guide lists the maximum performance burden (as supposedly recommended by the manufacturer) for both the Q16 and the JH18 at 650 lbs. I had good quotes for several different Souris models, but ended up not being able to make the trips around the big lake.
