The war on drugs is a horrible machine that indiscriminately grinds up innocent lives who are unlucky enough to be caught in the ballooning mess. Miss Bala (English: "Miss Bullet") is a 2019 American action thriller film directed by Catherine Hardwicke and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, based on the 2011 Mexican film of the same name. Laura Guerrero is dragged along through the turbulent current of the drug war, her name spoken by her or others reinforcing the subject whose life is being irrevocably changed.

If you ever saw Miss Congeniality and thought “I wish this had more drugs and murder in it” well have I got a movie for you. It’s numbing to the point of nothingness. The film attempts to put the audience in the shoes of Laura, the young woman mistakenly caught up with the wrong people, the key way they achieve this is by the use of long takes, slow tracking shots and an absence of a soundtrack.

Well worth the rental. Slow burning atmosphere, controlled cinematography, commendable performances and more than anything a language of film. Did anyone count? Stephanie Sigman Noé ... so far removed from what the real-life woman probably had to deal with and subsequently left a bad taste in my mouth.

The volume of long oner takes in this movie has the effect of kidnapping the audience along with Laura Guerrero. Powerful film. But as a gritty reboot of Miss Congeniality not so bad. The film is also kinda regressive with an ending screen describing the thousands of annual deaths in the war on drugs and suggesting the insane killers and rapists who kidnap Sigman might be at fault.

Coupled with a gutting performance by Stephanie Sigman, the result is a brutal and powerful movie.
